UNION SQUARE – Thai restaurant chain Spices The Union Square location was closed by the Health Department because it was infested with cockroaches, officials said.

Spice, at 39 E. 13th St., was closed after raking 53 points of violation during a May 4 inspection, including transgressions like storing food at unsafe temperatures and failing to clean food surfaces properly – but the main reason for the shutdown was because of the infestation, according to the Department of Health.

The restaurant was still closed Thursday afternoon, and an employee who declined to reveal his name but identified himself as a manager declined to comment more than saying “we have a lot of work to do”.

Live cockroaches were also found in the restaurant during inspections in September 2014 and April 2014, according to DOH records.

During its last inspection, the DOH determined that the restaurant maintained “conditions conducive to attracting vermin to the premises and / or allowing vermin to exist,” according to the records.

Spice, which has multiple locations across town, serves Southeast Asian dishes including walnut shrimp, teriyaki salmon and grilled honey duck.
